HIRING MEASURING EQUIPMENT

Also when using building dryers, it not always excactly clear how long the drying process will take. To know just how dry your wall or screed already is, you can use specialised measuring equipment. At buildingdryers.be we have two different types of devices that can be used for this purpose. We will briefly explain what this measuring equipment does.

Digital moisture meter

The T650 digital moisture meter is a professional capacitive moisture meter that can take measurements up to 4cm deep in the subsurface. This measuring equipment operates according to the digital principle and does not suffer from measurement drift, a common occurrence among analogue meters. Unlike the calcium carbide measuring equipment, this meter provides a very accurate measurement result in just a few seconds. This moisture meter can be hired for €1.5/day. If you hire the device in combination with a Bronze Silver or Gold package, you also get a nice discount on the daily price.

Calcium carbide measuring equipment

The calcium carbide measuring case is indicated when there is a dispute with the contractor or parquet floor layer. It is also the sole measuring equipment that is legally accepted, and is therefore often used for legal appraisals. It is a conventional yet reliable measuring method to determine the absolute moisture content of floors. All the accessories are combined in a metal case.

Which equipment to use?

How do you know which measuring equipment you should hire? This will, of course, depend on the situation. The T650 is ideal for rapidly performing moisture measurements at different places. It is an iron ball that is placed perpendicular against the wall or screed, after which the digital measurement results can be read out immediately. The CCM, by contrast, is time consuming because it involves a series of steps:

Step 1: Take the chisel and the hammer and cut up to 4cm deep into the screed until loose screed fragments are formed. Break them up in the lead bowl with the hammer until powder and small stones are obtained.

Step 2: Weigh out 20 g of the screed on the scale. The container weighs around 8 g, so you should subtract this amount. You need 20 g of the actual screed.

Step 3: Pour 20 g of screed into the tube, insert the ball bearings and one calcium carbide ampoule. This is the glass tube. Click the meter on it so it is hermetically sealed.

Step 4: Shake for one minute until the ball bearings shatter the tube. This produces a chemical reaction that results in a value to be read out on the meter. The maximum permissible value is 1.9%, depending on the type of screed.

As indicated above, this is the only measuring method that is approved in court. A combination of both methods is also possible, and is often applied by parquet floor layers. They will first perform a rapid measurement using the T650 to measure the dryness of the screed and if these values are OK, they take a final measurement using the calcium carbide meter. In this way, a lot of time is saved.
